Cristiano Ronaldo overtakes Selena Gomez to become the most followed person on Instagram

 Selena Gomez's absence appears to have contributed to the actress and singer losing the title of most followed person on Instagram.

The new holder of the title is soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, who, according to USWeekly Monday, has 144,338,650 followers compared to Selena's 144,321,029.

Ronaldo has an eight-year-old son Cristiano Jr. who was born in the US in 2010 and who he has full custody of.

Her is also father to twins Eva and Mateo who were born in  June 2017 in the US via a surrogate.

And in November 2017, he became a dad again when his girlfriend Georgina gave birth to their daughter Alana.

He regularly posts photos to his Instagram of his family life with Spanish model girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, 23, and his four children.

The soccer star also shares pics of himself on the soccer pitch, working out and from his travels.

Meanwhile, Selena, 26, last posted to her Instagram on September 23.

She shared a selfie along with a message explaining her decision to take a step back from social media.

She wrote: 'Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given.'

And in an Instagram Live video in September, Selena also spoke about how she doesn't care how many Instagram followers she has.

'I don’t. I don’t care. I could have none tomorrow. Makes no difference. It’s just a number and it’s insane so many people are obsessed with a number. It’s like, chill out,' she said.

Selena had owned the title of most followed person on Instagram since 2016 wehen she overtook her friend Taylor Swift.

Taylor currently has 112 million followers on the social media platform and other celebrities with huge followings include Ariana Grande with 132 million, Kim Kardashian with 120 million and Beyoncé with 119 million.
